The National Weather Service in Boise issued a Fire Weather Watch for portions of southern Idaho on October 8, warning of conditions that could fuel rapid fire spread.
The advisory covers the Owyhee Mountains and Southern Highlands regions, specifically targeting Fire Weather Zones 423 and 426. Officials indicated that critical fire weather conditions are possible as dry air and strong winds move through the area ahead of an approaching cold front.
Forecasters expect the most significant impacts during Friday afternoon. West winds are projected to reach speeds between 15 and 20 mph, with gusts up to 35 mph. These winds will combine with low relative humidity levels, which are expected to drop to between 11 and 19 percent.
Temperatures in the affected zones are forecast to range from 79 to 85 degrees. The combination of heat, dryness, and wind creates an environment where any ignition source could result in a fire that catches and spreads quickly. Concern is greatest in the southern half of the designated watch areas.
The National Weather Service advised against outdoor burning during the period of elevated risk. The watch remains in effect until 6:00 p.m. MDT on October 9, when a cold front is expected to pass through Friday night and alter the weather pattern.
