Twin Falls schools hold America 250 Independence assemblies

Twin Falls School District Holds America 250 Independence Assemblies Across Idaho Schools

Students across the Twin Falls School District in Idaho are participating in a series of patriotic assemblies this week honoring the nation’s approaching 250th birthday, with events highlighting American history, sacrifice, and the enduring values enshrined in the country’s founding documents.

The America 250 Independence Assemblies kicked off at Canyon Ridge High School, where students performed the national anthem, watched the school’s military drum cadence, and viewed a collection of patriotic videos — including tributes titled “America,” “God Bless the USA,” “This is America,” and “We the People.” According to district officials, the assemblies are being held throughout Twin Falls schools, not just at Canyon Ridge.

Students Reflect on American Identity and Sacrifice

The assemblies appear to be making a meaningful impression on students. Canyon Ridge senior Wyatt Kelly said the event brought into focus what it means to be an American.

“Teaching me just what it kind of means to be an American and how we got to this point and really lets me be grateful for how many people sacrificed for me to be here,” Kelly said, in remarks reported by KMVT.

Fellow senior Bradley Furukawa said the assembly helped him recognize freedoms that are easy to overlook in daily life.

“One thing that really put into perspective is the things that we take for granted everyday… getting up choosing what we do, what we wear… having the opinion to speak out about things we believe in — and that’s not normal everywhere,” Furukawa said, according to KMVT.

Those sentiments reflect the broader goal of the assemblies — to reconnect students with the history and principles that define the United States, particularly as the country approaches the landmark semiquincentennial in July 2026.

Classrooms Follow Up With Lessons on the Constitution and Declaration of Independence

Jeremy Belliston, head of the social studies department at Canyon Ridge High School, said the assemblies serve as a launching point for deeper classroom engagement throughout the week.

“Just promote to the kids what’s going to happen in July and get them to just kind of reflect on our 250th birthday and all the sacrifice that has happened to get to where we are today,” Belliston said, in remarks reported by KMVT.

Belliston described a mix of classroom activities planned to follow the assembly, including lessons on the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, with an emphasis on applying those founding documents to current events. “Just different lessons that are going to help the kids reflect,” he said.

Wendy Ohlensehlen, director of secondary programs for the Twin Falls School District, expressed enthusiasm for the initiative. “We’re super excited to have our students engaged in these experiences and learn what the last 250 years have meant,” Ohlensehlen said, according to KMVT.

The week of activities is part of a broader push in the district to prepare students for civic participation and historical awareness as the nation marks a once-in-a-generation milestone. Teaching students about American founding principles, constitutional rights, and the cost of freedom aligns closely with Idaho’s broader emphasis on civics education in public schools.

Community Event Planned at Twin Falls City Park

The school activities are building toward a larger public engagement event scheduled for May 6 at Twin Falls City Park, running from 4:30 to 7 p.m. The event is described as an annual education and engagement gathering, and this year’s edition is expected to carry added significance given the nation’s 250th anniversary on the horizon.

Families and community members are encouraged to attend and continue the conversations about American history that students will be having in classrooms throughout the week. For those interested in other upcoming community events, the CALS Awards Banquet on Thursday, April 30 is another opportunity to gather and recognize achievement across the Magic Valley region.

What Comes Next

Students in the Twin Falls School District will spend the remainder of the week in history-focused classroom sessions before the community celebration at Twin Falls City Park on May 6. As July 4, 2026 approaches — marking 250 years of American independence — district officials say the goal is for students to carry a deeper appreciation for the nation’s founding principles and the generations of Americans who sacrificed to preserve them. Additional America 250 events are expected to be announced across Twin Falls County and the broader Magic Valley region in the coming weeks.
