Families across much of Twin Falls County will see a familiar benefit return this fall: free meals at school. The Twin Falls School District has confirmed that 13 of its schools will again offer free breakfast and lunch to all students during the upcoming 2026 school year, continuing a federal program that ties eligibility to the economic makeup of each campus.
How Schools Qualify
A school’s participation in the program depends on how many of its students come from households already receiving assistance through Medicaid, SNAP food benefits, foster care, or other qualifying government services. When enough students at a given campus meet those criteria, the entire school unlocks free meals for all enrolled students — regardless of individual family income.
Three schools in the district currently fall short of that federal threshold: Rock Creek, O’Leary, and Pillar Falls elementary schools. Families whose children attend those campuses will still need to complete meal applications to determine eligibility for reduced-cost or free meals through the standard process. District officials have expressed hope that additional campuses may eventually qualify as enrollment and community demographics shift over time.
Child Nutrition Director Crystal Tubbs summed up the program’s core purpose simply: “We know that kids perform better when their bellies are full.”
Summer Feeding Continues Through July
Even before the school year begins, the district is actively feeding students across the community. The summer meal program is currently running at nine locations throughout the area, serving approximately 1,500 meals each day. That effort continues through July 31, providing consistent nutrition access for families during the weeks when school cafeterias would otherwise be closed.
Child Nutrition Menu Planner Margie Knowles called the overall effort “a great program,” reflecting the department’s investment in keeping students nourished year-round.
For families at the 13 qualifying schools, no paperwork or income verification is required when the academic year opens — meals will simply be available at no cost. For those at Rock Creek, O’Leary, or Pillar Falls, the district encourages completing meal applications early so students are covered from the first day of school.
What Comes Next
The summer feeding program wraps up at the end of July, and the district’s attention will then shift to preparing for the fall semester. As enrollment figures and qualifying-service participation rates are updated, the district will reassess which campuses may be eligible to join the free-meal program in future school years.
