Twin Falls Group to Fly 400-Pound Flag Over Snake River Canyon for July 4th and 9/11 Milestone

A 400-pound American flag will soar over the Snake River Canyon west of the Perrine Bridge this Independence Day season, marking a pair of significant national milestones for Magic Valley residents and visitors alike.

The massive banner, coordinated by Magic Valley 911 Memorial volunteers, will fly twice this year — once for the Fourth of July and again in September to mark the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks. The dual appearances make 2026 an especially meaningful year for the program, which also coincides with America’s 250th birthday.

Kickoff Event at Twin Falls Visitor Center

The celebration gets underway on Saturday, June 28, with a program beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the Twin Falls Visitor Center. The flag is set to be raised at the end of the week, flying through Independence Day. The event serves as the official launch of the local patriotic season and gives community members a chance to witness the massive banner being deployed over the canyon.

Beyond Twin Falls, a smaller version of the flag is scheduled to appear at Buhl Sagebrush Days on July 4, bringing the patriotic display to that community’s Independence Day festivities. Additional appearances are planned at the Cassia and Twin Falls County Fairs and Rodeos, extending the flag’s reach across the region throughout the summer and fall.

A Regional Draw and Community Effort

The flag program draws attention well beyond Twin Falls city limits. Tourists traveling from Canada have made stops specifically to view the flag, and media coverage has come in from a multi-state region. The Snake River Canyon backdrop — one of southern Idaho’s most dramatic natural landmarks — makes the display a striking sight for anyone crossing the Perrine Bridge or traveling along the canyon rim.

The effort is powered entirely by volunteers through the Magic Valley 911 Memorial organization. Moving and raising a 400-pound flag requires significant coordination and manpower, and the group is actively seeking additional volunteers to help with this year’s schedule of appearances. Those interested in supporting the program are encouraged to reach out to the organization directly.

With Idaho’s summer event calendar filling up — from county fairs to rodeos — the flag program is shaping up to be a consistent presence at major regional gatherings through the fall’s 9/11 commemoration. Residents looking for other reasons to explore the Magic Valley this summer can also check out attractions like the South Hills Hummingbird Station near Twin Falls, which has been drawing visitors from across the region to a remote stretch of southern Idaho road.

What Comes Next

The flag’s first major appearance of 2026 is set for the June 27 kickoff program at the Twin Falls Visitor Center, with the Independence Day flight to follow. Planning is already underway for the September 11 anniversary display, which will mark a quarter century since the attacks that inspired the flag program’s founding mission. Community members interested in volunteering or attending upcoming flag events should watch for announcements from the Magic Valley 911 Memorial.
