The City of Twin Falls is moving forward with a major expansion of Vista Bonita Park on the city’s south side, a project that will nearly double the park’s current footprint and bring a range of new amenities to a growing residential area.
Twin Falls City Council approved funding for the project, which has been in development for roughly two years. Completion is targeted for September, according to city officials.
What’s Being Added
The expansion will bring a dog park, athletic fields, additional restrooms, and a dedicated community event space. A new parking area is planned off Washington Street South, along with a crosswalk on that same stretch to safely connect nearby residents to the park’s new entrance.
The existing park already offers a walking trail, playground equipment, and public restrooms. The land earmarked for expansion sits adjacent to Fire Station No. 3 and is already city-owned, which helped streamline the funding process.
Josh Palmer, the City of Twin Falls public information coordinator, described the scope of the work as significant for surrounding neighborhoods. “It’s going to be a very substantial expansion to add a lot of new amenities and also, better yet, connect it to a lot of the residences in this area,” he said.
Palmer also noted that the project reflects a broader goal the city has been working toward. “One of our objectives we’ve had the city is to put a park within walking distance of every home,” he said, pointing to the crosswalk and new entrance as key elements of that vision.
Two Years in the Making
The Vista Bonita expansion has been in the planning pipeline for approximately two years. Using land already in the city’s possession avoided the cost and delay of acquiring new property, allowing the project to advance more efficiently once funding was secured by the council.
The south side of Twin Falls has seen continued residential growth in recent years, and city leaders have worked to ensure park infrastructure keeps pace with population. The new amenities, particularly the dog park and athletic fields, are expected to draw residents from across the surrounding neighborhood.
With a September target, construction would wrap up ahead of fall sports seasons, potentially allowing athletic fields to see use before year’s end. The city has not released a detailed construction schedule, but the funding approval marks a firm commitment to moving ahead.
For Magic Valley families looking for outdoor recreation options this summer, other community events and activities are already underway. Communities across the Magic Valley are gearing up for Fourth of July weekend with festivals, rodeos, and family programming throughout the region.
What Comes Next
With funding in place and a completion target set for September, the City of Twin Falls is expected to move into the construction phase in the coming weeks. Residents living near Vista Bonita Park should watch for updates from the city regarding construction timelines and any temporary impacts to current park access. The city has not announced a formal groundbreaking ceremony as of this report.
