One Person Shot and Killed by Police in Twin Falls, Idaho, Officials Confirm

Twin Falls SWAT Team Responds to Stabbing Suspect at Washington Street Residence

Twin Falls, Idaho — One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Twin Falls Wednesday afternoon, authorities confirmed. The incident unfolded after Twin Falls Police Department officers were called to St. Luke’s Magic Valley Hospital at approximately 1:07 p.m. to meet with the victim of a stabbing.

Officers identified a suspect in the stabbing and located the individual at a residence in the 600 block of Washington Street North in Twin Falls. At approximately 4:49 p.m., officers established a perimeter and closed off the area along Washington Street North between Falls Avenue and Filer Avenue.

A SWAT Team composed of Twin Falls Police Department and Twin Falls County Sheriff’s officers responded to the scene to apprehend the suspect. During the response, the suspect was shot by law enforcement. Medical personnel were staged nearby and responded immediately, but life-saving measures were unsuccessful. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Critical Incident Task Force Activated; Cassia County Sheriff’s Office Leading Investigation

Following the shooting, the Magic Valley Critical Incident Task Force was activated, and investigative authority was transferred to the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office, as is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings in the region. The independent investigation is designed to provide an objective review of the circumstances surrounding the use of deadly force.

Lt. Steven Gassert of the Twin Falls Police Department confirmed the sequence of events to reporters at the scene. “While attempting to execute that search warrant, it did result in an officer-involved shooting… we do have one subject deceased,” Lt. Gassert said, according to reporting by Idaho News 6.

Gassert also indicated that the road closure along Washington Street North would be lifted as the investigation allowed. “We’ll be opening it up as the situation allows us to,” he said.

Authorities emphasized that the shooting was an isolated incident and that no ongoing threat to the public existed. “We appreciate the community’s patience and cooperation as officers work to safely resolve the incident,” the Twin Falls Police Department said in a public statement released via social media.

The identity of the deceased suspect has not yet been publicly released. No officers were reported injured in the incident.

Community Impact and Department Response

The shooting drew significant law enforcement presence to the residential area of Twin Falls, prompting road closures and drawing community attention throughout the late afternoon hours. Officers worked to secure the scene and maintain public safety in the surrounding neighborhood while the response was underway.

The Twin Falls Police Department has faced increased public engagement in recent months. Officers have been active on multiple enforcement priorities across the city, including a stepped-up hands-free law enforcement effort carried out at public urging. Separately, Twin Falls courts have seen notable criminal proceedings, including a Twin Falls woman suspected of rape whose bond was increased to $500,000.

Officer-involved shootings in Idaho are routinely referred to an independent law enforcement agency for investigation to ensure transparency and impartiality. The activation of the Magic Valley Critical Incident Task Force and the handoff to the Cassia County Sheriff’s Office follows that established protocol.

No further details regarding the original stabbing victim’s condition, the location of the initial stabbing, or the identity of the deceased suspect had been released as of the time of this report. The Twin Falls Police Department indicated that additional information would be forthcoming as the investigation progresses.

What Comes Next

The Cassia County Sheriff’s Office is now leading the investigation into the officer-involved shooting. Findings from that investigation will ultimately determine the full circumstances under which deadly force was used. The Twin Falls Police Department is expected to release additional details, including the identity of the suspect, once next-of-kin notifications have been completed. Members of the public with information relevant to the case are encouraged to contact local law enforcement. Idaho News Network will continue to follow this developing story.
