Twin Falls Man Killed in April Officer-Involved Shooting Identified
TWIN FALLS — Authorities have released the name of the man fatally shot by law enforcement last month on Washington Street North, identifying him as Colton Justus Copeland, 29, of Twin Falls.
Copeland was shot on April 29 near a residence in the 600 block of Washington Street North following an hour-long standoff with officers. Law enforcement stated that Copeland was armed with a knife at the time of the shooting. Medical personnel at the scene were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead.
His identity was released this week by the Twin Falls County Coroner’s Office.
SWAT Team Responded After Earlier Stabbing Report
The incident began after law enforcement received a report of a stabbing earlier in the afternoon. The stabbing victim spoke with officers at a local hospital. A joint SWAT team — made up of officers from the Twin Falls Police Department and deputies from the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office — was deployed to the scene on Washington Street North, where the extended negotiation with Copeland took place before the fatal shooting occurred.
The Cassia County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation into the shooting as part of the Critical Incident Task Force, which handles officer-involved shooting cases in the region. Few additional details regarding the specific circumstances that prompted officers to open fire have been publicly released at this time.
Copeland Had Prior Criminal History, Mental Health Struggles
Court records indicate Copeland had a history of prior criminal offenses, including incidents as a juvenile. He served prison time in Fremont County in 2015 after being sentenced for assaulting corrections staff at a detention facility.
A subsequent sentencing in 2016 resulted in a unified term of three years fixed and seven years indeterminate, according to prior reporting by another regional outlet.
Copeland had also been receiving mental health treatment since the age of four, according to available records.
The investigation remains ongoing. The Critical Incident Task Force has not announced a timeline for the release of further findings, and no additional law enforcement personnel information has been made public at this stage.
Officer-involved shootings in Twin Falls County are investigated by outside agencies under standard protocol to ensure independent review. The Twin Falls Police Department and the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office both participated in the SWAT response but are not leading the investigation into the shooting itself.
What Comes Next
The Cassia County Sheriff’s Office is expected to continue its review of the shooting as part of the Critical Incident Task Force process. Once the investigation concludes, findings are typically forwarded to the appropriate prosecutorial authority for review, which determines whether the use of force was legally justified. No charges against any officers have been announced. Residents seeking updates on the case can monitor public statements from the Twin Falls County Coroner’s Office and local law enforcement agencies.
