Kimberly Families Celebrate America’s 250th with Service Projects, Food, and Fireworks

Kimberly High School became the center of a community-wide Fourth of July celebration Friday evening as the Kimberly Idaho Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints hosted its America Birthday Bash, drawing families together for food, games, live entertainment, and hands-on service in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary.

The event was organized as part of the Idaho 250 Service Initiative, a statewide effort encouraging Idahoans to collectively reach a significant volunteer milestone. Co-chair Caroline Riley described the spirit of the evening as something larger than just a local gathering. “It’s like a giant birthday party that’s happening all over the nation,” she said. “This is our representation of it here in our community.”

Service at the Core

While bounce houses and a foam party kept younger attendees entertained in the youth activity area, the commons at Kimberly High School served a more purposeful function. Volunteers staffed stations supporting a canned food drive organized by Just Serve, assembled hygiene kits for East End Providers, wrapped Christmas gifts for the same organization, and wrote cards for active-duty military service members.

Riley said the broader goal driving the initiative is ambitious but achievable. “The goal is to have 250,000 acts of service by Idahoans by our 250th American birthday,” she noted. Planning for the event began four to five months in advance, a timeline that reflects the scale of the effort the Kimberly stake took on to bring the celebration to life.

Commitments made during the evening extended beyond the night itself. Attendees pledged future volunteer hours toward painting the Kimberly School District’s maintenance building and repainting the exterior of the district’s circular administrative building — a continuation of the community-improvement spirit tied to the Idaho 250 initiative. The district has recently benefited from other improvement efforts as well, including federally funded energy-efficient windows and doors at Kimberly Middle School.

Food, Games, and Fireworks

Morris Steakhouse provided a free pulled pork dinner for attendees, while a games area offered cornhole, a mechanical bull, nine square, and four square alongside the youth zones. The evening’s entertainment culminated in a live stream of the Tabernacle Choir’s concert at the Hollywood Bowl in Southern California, offering families a shared patriotic experience before fireworks lit up the sky at 10 p.m.

The America Birthday Bash reflects a broader tradition of civic and community engagement in Kimberly. Kimberly High School has earned a reputation as one of the region’s standout institutions, having received the District 4A Schools of Excellence honor for four consecutive years.

What Comes Next

With volunteer pledges already secured for district building improvement projects, service efforts connected to the Idaho 250 initiative are expected to continue in the weeks ahead. Residents interested in participating in upcoming service opportunities in the Kimberly area can look for announcements through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ Just Serve platform and local community boards as the 250th anniversary year continues through the summer and fall.
