Kimberly Bulldogs Open 2026 Season Hungry to Avenge State Title Loss

Eight Points Away from Glory

The Kimberly Bulldogs enter the 2026 football season carrying the sting of a state championship game that slipped away by just eight points. That narrow defeat has fueled an offseason of preparation and renewed resolve, and with several talented returners leading the charge, the Bulldogs believe this is the year they finish the job.

Senior running back and linebacker Monroe Whitten, one of the team’s most vocal leaders, has not let the memory fade. “I think we all thought that we could have won that game, and we obviously made mistakes that game,” Whitten said, as first reported by KMVT. That accountability — owning the errors that cost them a title — has set the tone heading into fall camp.

Senior center Brandon Elizondo put the team’s goal plainly. “One of the things I want to get done this senior year is just win the state championship,” Elizondo told KMVT. For the veteran offensive lineman anchoring the front, there is no ambiguity about what this season represents.

A Loaded Roster and a Punishing Schedule

Kimberly returns a deep, experienced group that includes Joe Barretts, Titus Osterman, and Graysen Widman — all familiar names for fans who followed last year’s title run. The junior class is particularly noteworthy: several of those players earned first team All-State and All-Conference recognition as sophomores, meaning the Bulldogs carry above-average talent at multiple positions heading into what promises to be a demanding season.

One newcomer drawing attention is incoming junior Al Santos, who stands at 6’4″ and gives the Bulldogs a physically imposing presence. His development this season could prove a significant factor as Kimberly pushes through a gauntlet of opponents.

And that gauntlet is real. Kimberly is reportedly scheduled against one of the toughest non-conference slates in the state this fall. Coaches who want to build championship-caliber teams often seek out difficult early-season tests, and the Bulldogs appear ready to embrace that philosophy rather than pad their record against softer competition. For a team with state title ambitions, proving themselves early could carry significant momentum into postseason play.

There are health concerns to monitor as well. Gunner Beckstead suffered a broken finger during the second drive of the Fruitland game, a development the program will need to manage as the season gets underway. Staying healthy through a difficult schedule is always a factor in deep playoff runs.

Season Opener Against Fruitland

Kimberly opens its 2026 season against Fruitland on August 22, giving the Bulldogs an early opportunity to set the tone. Fruitland, a familiar opponent based on the Beckstead injury reference, will serve as the first measuring stick for a team that believes it belongs among Idaho’s elite at the 3A level.

For a community like Kimberly, football carries deep roots. The Bulldogs have built a program that consistently competes for titles, and that tradition raises expectations — but it also produces players who understand what winning at the highest level requires. The junior class, already decorated with All-State honors, grew up in that culture. Combined with seniors who have experienced the heartbreak of falling short, the Bulldogs have both the talent and the motivation that championship teams typically need.

What Comes Next

The Kimberly Bulldogs kick off their 2026 campaign on August 22 against Fruitland. From there, they will navigate one of Idaho’s most difficult non-conference schedules before turning their attention to postseason play. If the offseason work and senior leadership translate to the field, Kimberly could be playing in December with a state championship on the line — and this time, closing it out.
