Major Reconstruction Underway on U.S. 30
The Idaho Transportation Department is executing a comprehensive rebuild of Kimberly Road, which serves as U.S. 30 through Twin Falls County, addressing years of deterioration in the roadway base. The project spans from Blue Lakes Boulevard to Eastland Drive and represents the culmination of seven years of planning and coordination within the department’s capital improvement process.
The roadway had developed noticeable bumps and structural issues in its base layer, prompting ITD to schedule the reconstruction. Kimberly Road carries substantial traffic from local industries utilizing heavy equipment, making the road’s condition a safety and efficiency concern for the region.
“All of our projects go into what’s called the ITIP and that is our seven-year plan,” told the KMVT Courtney Wagner, Public Information Officer for ITD District 4. “Those things can get moved around, but this project has been thought about for about seven years now.”
Safety Upgrades at Key Intersection
Beyond pavement work, the project includes a comprehensive base rebuild and intersection improvements. At the five-point intersection of Blue Lakes Boulevard and Kimberly Road, ITD is upgrading traffic signals and pedestrian signals, and installing new pedestrian lighting to enhance visibility and safety for crossing traffic.
The department is also reworking the intersection where Kimberly and Hankins roads meet, ensuring geometric and operational improvements across the corridor.
Overnight Work Minimizes Disruption
To limit impact on traffic flow and local businesses that depend on access to Kimberly Road, construction crews are working primarily during overnight hours. The overnight paving portion of the project is expected to require approximately five days of intensive work, with the overall reconstruction targeted for completion in October or November 2026.
Wagner emphasized the trade-offs inherent in the project. “It is short-term pain for long-term gain, and it’s really going to make this stretch so much safer and so much smoother to drive,” she told KMVT.
The reconstruction reflects ITD’s broader infrastructure strategy for the Magic Valley region. The department’s seven-year improvement plan (ITIP) prioritizes aging corridors and safety enhancements on routes that carry significant commercial and local traffic.
What Comes Next
Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures and possible delays during evening and early morning hours as paving operations advance. The project timeline positions Kimberly Road for full reopening before winter weather arrives. Local business operators and regular commuters are advised to monitor ITD communications for specific work schedules and any changes to project timing as autumn approaches.
