Buhl Man Dies in Early Morning Single-Vehicle Crash on U.S. Highway 30 in Twin Falls County

BUHL, Idaho — A 29-year-old Buhl man was killed early Monday morning after his pickup truck left the roadway and struck a tree on U.S. Highway 30 in Twin Falls County, according to the Idaho State Police.

The crash occurred at 4:22 a.m. on Monday, March 30, at milepost 198 on U.S. Highway 30. Idaho State Police responded to the scene and issued a news release detailing the circumstances of the fatal wreck.

What Investigators Know About the Crash

According to Idaho State Police, the driver was traveling eastbound in a 2025 Ram 1500 pickup when the vehicle departed the left shoulder of the roadway. The truck traveled through a fence before striking a tree. The driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other vehicles were involved, and no other injuries were reported. ISP has not released the name of the victim at this time, which is standard procedure pending official next-of-kin notification.

The crash remains under active investigation by Idaho State Police. Additional details regarding potential contributing factors — including road conditions, speed, or other circumstances — have not been released as the investigation continues.

Seat Belt Use Remains a Critical Safety Factor on Idaho Roads

Monday’s fatal crash brings renewed attention to seat belt compliance on Idaho’s rural highways. According to the Idaho Transportation Department, seat belt usage saves hundreds of lives across the state each year, yet unbelted fatalities continue to account for a significant portion of traffic deaths statewide.

U.S. Highway 30 is a major east-west corridor through southern Idaho and Twin Falls County, connecting communities including Buhl, Twin Falls, and points beyond. The highway sees a regular mix of commercial, agricultural, and passenger vehicle traffic, particularly during early morning hours when farm and work-related travel is common in Magic Valley.

Rural highway crashes in Idaho often carry heightened risk due to factors such as limited lighting, long stretches of road without barriers, and delayed emergency response times compared to more urban areas. Single-vehicle crashes, in particular, are frequently tied to distracted driving, fatigue, excessive speed, or other driver-related factors — though ISP has not indicated any specific cause in this case pending investigation.

Idaho law requires all front-seat occupants to wear seat belts, and safety advocates consistently point to proper restraint use as one of the most effective tools for surviving a crash. Studies from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicate that seat belts reduce the risk of death in passenger vehicle crashes by approximately 45 percent.

Idaho State Police Leads Investigation

The Idaho State Police District 4 office, which covers Twin Falls County and the surrounding Magic Valley region, is handling the investigation. ISP investigators routinely reconstruct crash scenes to determine speed, trajectory, and other factors that may have contributed to a collision.

Residents with information relevant to the investigation are encouraged to contact Idaho State Police District 4.

The Twin Falls County community has faced several traffic fatalities on its rural highways in recent years, underscoring ongoing concerns about roadway safety in the region. Local and state officials have periodically called for increased enforcement efforts and public awareness campaigns targeting seat belt use, distracted driving, and impaired driving on Magic Valley roadways.
