National Weather Service Issues Red Flag Warning for Twin Falls Area Tuesday Afternoon

The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for portions of Twin Falls County, including the Western Twin Falls Bureau of Land Management area and the Southern Highlands, running from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM MDT Tuesday.

Forecasters are calling for a dangerous combination of heat, low humidity, and strong winds during that six-hour window. High temperatures are expected to reach between 92 and 99 degrees, while relative humidity drops to just 10 to 15 percent — conditions that can dry out vegetation rapidly and turn even a small spark into a fast-moving blaze.

Wind and Fire Spread Risk

Northwest winds of 20 to 25 mph are forecast for the affected areas, with gusts reaching as high as 35 mph. Those sustained winds, combined with the critically low humidity levels, create the potential for rapid fire spread across rangeland and wildland areas.

Residents and landowners in the Western Twin Falls BLM and Southern Highlands zones are strongly discouraged from any outdoor burning during the warning period. Even burning that appears controlled can escape quickly under Red Flag conditions, and a single fire during a warning window can outpace suppression efforts within minutes.

What Residents Should Know

A Red Flag Warning is the highest fire-weather alert issued by the National Weather Service and signals that conditions are prime for wildfire ignition and growth. During the warning window, residents should avoid using equipment that could generate sparks, refrain from burning any debris or agricultural material, and ensure that any campfires or recreational fires are fully extinguished before the afternoon heating begins.

Anyone who spots a wildfire should call 911 immediately and avoid attempting to fight it independently. With winds gusting to 35 mph, fires can shift direction suddenly, putting untrained individuals at serious risk.

The warning is set to expire at 9:00 PM MDT, when temperatures cool and humidity levels are expected to recover slightly. Residents should monitor updated forecasts through the National Weather Service, as conditions can change and warnings may be extended if the weather pattern persists.

Twin Falls County has seen elevated fire danger in recent summers as high heat and drought conditions grip the Magic Valley. Motorists traveling Highway 93 and surrounding rural roads are also urged to exercise caution and avoid pulling vehicles onto dry roadside vegetation, as catalytic converters can ignite grass fires. What Comes Next

The Red Flag Warning expires Tuesday evening at 9:00 PM MDT. Residents should watch for any extended or follow-up warnings if the high-pressure system driving the heat and low humidity lingers into midweek. The National Weather Service Magic Valley forecast office provides updated fire-weather outlooks at weather.gov. Until the warning lifts, all outdoor burning in the affected areas should be suspended.
