Kimberly Bulldogs Claim Fourth Straight 4A District 4 Softball Title After Gooding Scare
Senators Force Winner-Take-All Game Before Bulldogs Rally
KIMBERLY — The Kimberly Bulldogs softball team had gone most of the season without tasting defeat, but Gooding’s Senators handed them a stinging loss Wednesday at Kimberly High School in the 4A District 4 softball tournament — and then watched the Bulldogs respond with a championship-clinching victory to capture their fourth consecutive district title.
Entering Wednesday’s action, Kimberly carried a 23-2 record. One of those two losses had come against Nampa by a single run, the other an 11-run defeat to Gooding in a regular-season finale. The Senators wasted no time reminding the Bulldogs that first meeting was no accident.
Gooding pitcher Kaylee Silver was at the center of both results. In the first game on Wednesday, Silver shut down Kimberly’s offense, surrendering just six hits while her team delivered at the plate. Five Senators recorded multi-hit performances, with Scottlyn Martin leading the way with three hits and three RBIs. All nine Gooding batters who reached the plate logged at least one hit. The Senators scored four runs in the second inning and added three more in the top of the sixth to secure the victory, forcing a winner-take-all game immediately afterward.
That first-game loss marked one of Kimberly’s lowest hit totals of the season. Silver also holds the distinction of having held the Bulldogs to their fewest hits in a single game this year — a performance that came in the regular-season finale, when Kimberly managed just one hit in the 11-run loss.
Bulldogs Answer in Winner-Take-All Game
The second game looked far more like the Kimberly squad that has dominated 4A District 4 competition all season. The Bulldogs piled up 13 hits and plated eight runs in the first four innings alone, building a lead that proved insurmountable. Kimberly pitcher Gracie Alleman recorded five strikeouts in the decisive contest, while Silver managed four.
Maci Chiatovich delivered Kimberly’s only RBI of the first game, a hit in the opening inning that briefly tied things up. In the championship game, the Bulldogs spread their six hits across six different batters, an indicator of the lineup depth that has fueled their dominant season. Gooding managed nine hits and four runs in the winner-take-all game, with the bulk of that offensive production coming in the top of the seventh inning — too little, too late to overcome Kimberly’s lead. The Bulldogs closed out an 8-4 victory.
The district championship carries an automatic berth into the 4A state tournament, set to be held in Filer next week. Based on MaxPreps composite rankings, Kimberly projects to enter the state field as either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed. Cole Valley Christian, the team that defeated the Bulldogs in last season’s state tournament championship game, is expected to hold the other top seed.
Kimberly went 3-1 against Gooding this season, with an average margin of victory exceeding six runs in those three wins. Wednesday’s first game was a reminder, however, that the Senators remain a legitimate threat capable of shutting down even the Magic Valley’s most productive offense.
Gooding’s Season Continues With State Play-In Opportunity
Gooding’s postseason run is not finished. As the runner-up in the 4A District 4 tournament, the Senators earn a berth in a state play-in game against South Fremont, the runner-up from the 4A Mountain Rivers Conference. The two programs have not faced each other this season. South Fremont split its two games against Sawtooth Central Idaho Conference opponents during the year, including a run-rule loss to Kimberly and a two-run win over Buhl — two teams Gooding has also handled this season. Should Gooding win that play-in contest on Saturday, the Senators would advance to join Kimberly and the rest of the 4A field at the state tournament in Filer.
For Kimberly, Wednesday’s outcome was a reminder that postseason softball rarely goes according to script — and that the Bulldogs have the depth and resilience to respond when tested. As the state tournament approaches, Magic Valley fans will have another local team to follow in Filer next week. Two CSI women’s basketball players recently signed with Utah Tech, adding to a busy stretch of local athletic news across the region.
