Semi-trailer crash blocks Interstate 84 near Heyburn

Semi-Trailer Crash Blocks Interstate 84 Near Heyburn, Idaho; Driver Uninjured

Single-Vehicle Crash Closes Eastbound Lane for Several Hours

HEYBURN, Idaho — The Idaho State Police is investigating a single-vehicle crash in which a semi-trailer struck a concrete barrier along Interstate 84 near Heyburn, temporarily blocking eastbound traffic for multiple hours on Tuesday.

According to Idaho State Police, a 1995 freightliner, driven by a 33-year-old man from Jerome, was traveling eastbound at approximately noon when it struck a concrete barrier near mile marker 211 in a construction zone. The impact blocked the eastbound lane of travel and disrupted traffic flow along one of southern Idaho’s most heavily traveled stretches of interstate highway.

The driver was not injured in the crash. Idaho State Police noted, however, that the driver was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision — a reminder that safety restraints remain critical even in lower-speed incidents involving large commercial vehicles.

Construction crews responded quickly and established an emergency lane on the right shoulder, allowing traffic to move through the affected area while the scene was cleared. The swift action by crews helped minimize extended backups along I-84, a vital commercial and commuter corridor connecting the Magic Valley region to points east and west.

Construction Zone Safety Remains a Concern on Idaho Highways

The crash occurred within an active construction zone — a detail that underscores ongoing concerns about driver awareness and speed compliance in work areas across Idaho’s highway system. Construction zones present elevated risks for both workers and motorists, and state and local officials have repeatedly urged drivers to slow down and remain attentive when passing through these areas.

Interstate 84 serves as a critical artery for agricultural transport, commercial freight, and daily commuters throughout Twin Falls County and the broader Magic Valley. Incidents involving large commercial vehicles — particularly semi-trucks — can have significant downstream effects on supply chains, local businesses, and everyday travel.

The Idaho Transportation Department provided photographs of the scene, showing the semi-truck resting against the concrete barrier in the construction zone. No other vehicles were reported to be involved in the crash.

Idaho State Police said the crash remains under active investigation. No citations or charges had been publicly announced as of the time of this report.

Public safety agencies across Twin Falls County continue to respond to a range of incidents on the region’s road network and beyond. Earlier this year, Twin Falls law enforcement received a grant providing protective gear and safety tools to better equip officers responding to emergencies — including traffic incidents of this nature. Local emergency responders have also faced a busy season, including firefighters battling a residential blaze in Twin Falls that required a multi-unit response.

What Comes Next

The Idaho State Police investigation into the Heyburn crash is ongoing. Investigators will examine factors including driver conduct, road conditions within the construction zone, and whether the absence of a seat belt contributed to any risk of injury. Results of the investigation could inform whether any traffic citations or charges are issued against the driver.

Motorists traveling through construction zones along I-84 and other state highways are reminded to observe posted speed limits, remain alert to changing traffic patterns, and always wear a seat belt. The Idaho Transportation Department encourages drivers to check 511.idaho.gov for real-time road conditions and construction zone updates before traveling.
