Magic Valley Programs Enter State Play With Momentum
Six high school softball programs from the Magic Valley are heading to state tournaments beginning Thursday, May 14, representing a strong showing for the region across multiple classifications. The postseason field includes schools that have re-established themselves as consistent contenders as well as programs making long-awaited returns to top-level competition.
Kimberly enters the postseason as one of the more decorated programs in the field. The Bulldogs, who have captured two state titles and finished as runners-up in each of the last three seasons, claimed the 4A District 4 championship after a dramatic finish. Gooding defeated Kimberly in an earlier round of the district tournament, but the Bulldogs responded with a winner-take-all victory to claim the district crown. Both Kimberly and Gooding qualified for the 4A state tournament, which is being hosted at Filer High School — bringing the competition directly to Magic Valley.
Twin Falls and Gooding have each been regular participants at the state level and return again in 2026 to their respective tournaments. Several other area programs are making appearances that fans have been waiting years to see.
Wendell has not competed at a state tournament in more than a decade. This season, the Trojans navigated a difficult South East Idaho Conference to earn the No. 5 seed in the 3A classification. Burley, meanwhile, ended a drought of its own. The Bobcats captured their first-ever softball district championship this year, finishing 17-10 overall and going 11-1 in Great Basin Conference play. Head coach Adam Hope’s squad rebounded from a district tournament loss to Twin Falls by defeating the Bruins twice on May 7 to claim the title — a milestone moment in program history.
Burley and Twin Falls Storylines Headline the Field
Much of Burley’s offensive production flows through senior Taylin Beck, who leads the Bobcats in batting average, hits, RBIs, extra-base hits, and home runs. Her breakout season has coincided with the emergence of sophomore pitcher Ady Olmos, who has established herself as the top arm in the Great Basin Conference. Olmos recorded four hits in the district tournament victory over Twin Falls and is expected to carry a heavy workload if Burley intends to make a deep run. Burley enters the 3A state tournament as the No. 7 seed and opens play Thursday at 5:15 p.m. against No. 2 seed Vallivue at Post Falls High School. The two teams met early in the season, with Burley dropping that matchup 24-9 — though reports indicate the score did not fully reflect the competitiveness of the game, as Burley held an 8-7 advantage heading into the fifth inning before Vallivue scored 17 runs across the final two frames.
Twin Falls enters the 5A state tournament as the No. 8 seed, where the Bruins face No. 1 seed Middleton in the opening round. Middleton finished atop both the regular-season standings and the district tournament in the Southern Idaho Conference — a formidable first-round opponent for Twin Falls. Pitcher Kaitlyn Hudson and outfielder Bri Holcomb figure to be key contributors for the Bruins as they look to advance. Twin Falls area athletes have been making headlines across multiple spring sports; Twin Falls track standout Brooklyn Gambrel recently signed to compete at the College of Idaho, reflecting the depth of athletic talent coming out of the region this spring.
Idaho high school softball uses a double-elimination format at state, meaning teams can absorb one loss and continue competing. A team willing to battle through the losers bracket can play as many as seven games across three days — as Bishop Kelly demonstrated last season on its way to a 3A state title.
Each classification holds its tournament in a different region of the state. The 4A field comes to Magic Valley, hosted at Filer High School, giving local fans a chance to watch Kimberly and Gooding compete close to home. Other Magic Valley programs travel to Post Falls and other sites across Idaho. Jerome High School athletes Trey Smith and Britt Wells recently signed with the College of Southern Idaho, adding to a busy stretch of spring athletic news from across the Magic Valley.
