1896 Murder Site Of 2 Ranch Hands Was West Of Twin Falls ID

Deep Creek Murders of 1896: Twin Falls County’s Oldest Known Double Homicide

More than 130 years before Twin Falls County made headlines for violent crime cases drawing statewide attention, the region was the scene of one of southern Idaho’s earliest recorded murders — a double killing in the winter of 1896 that has never been fully resolved.

On February 4, 1896, two ranch hands, identified as Daniel Cummings and John Wilson, were shot dead at close range near Deep Creek, a largely undeveloped area of the Magic Valley located a few miles north of Castleford and less than 30 miles west of Twin Falls. The killings took place on what was a cold winter day, and the two men were left at the camp alongside some dirty laundry.

A third ranch hand discovered the bodies when he arrived at the camp on horseback shortly after the shootings, finding both men already dead. The case would come to be known historically as the Deep Creek Murders.

A Suspected Hired Killing in the Early Idaho Territory

What made the case particularly notable was not just its brutality, but the suspected motive behind it. Historical accounts suggest the executions were carried out by a hired gunman acting on behalf of the owner of a local cattle operation. The precise circumstances that led to the killings — and who ultimately ordered them — appear to have never been definitively established through prosecution or formal legal record.

Deep Creek remains a remote stretch of southern Idaho today. The area can be accessed via East 2500 North Road near its intersection with North 1000 East Road, and the surrounding landscape has changed little over the past century. The isolation of the location likely played a role in both the commission of the crime and the difficulty of investigating it in an era long before modern law enforcement tools existed.

A Cold Case From Another Century

The Deep Creek Murders stand as one of the oldest known violent crimes documented in the Twin Falls area, predating Idaho statehood by only six years. At a time when the Magic Valley was still frontier cattle country, disputes over land and livestock were not uncommon — and law enforcement infrastructure was thin across the region.

Twin Falls County law enforcement agencies in the modern era handle a far different landscape of crime. Recent cases have drawn scrutiny, including a Filer man sentenced to prison for lewd conduct and other serious offenses making their way through district courts.

The identities of the victims, Cummings and Wilson, remain the clearest known facts in a case where much else has been lost to time. No record of a conviction in connection with the killings has surfaced in historical accounts reviewed for this report.

What Comes Next

The Deep Creek Murders remain an open chapter in Twin Falls County history. Local historians and genealogical researchers with family ties to the area have occasionally revisited the case over the decades. Whether any documentation, family records, or oral histories survive that could shed additional light on what happened that February morning in 1896 remains unknown. Anyone with knowledge passed down through generations regarding the deaths of Daniel Cummings and John Wilson is encouraged to contact local historical societies or the Twin Falls County Sheriff’s Office.
